The only real GC day is today with mountain top finish on Kékestető, the highest peak in Hungary at just over 1,000M in elevation. There is another categorized climb early in the stage but it is more or less a hockey stick profile. Kékestető is a 11.5KM long averaging 5.6% with a very even slope until the last 3KM where it kicks up to between 7% and 8%.
Victor Vercouillie of Flanders-Baloise, Umberto Poli of Novo Nordisk, Zsolt Istlstekker of Epronex-Hungary Cycling Team, Bendegúz Mátyás Nagy of Karcag Cycling ÉPKAR Team, and Michal Schuran of United Shipping got up the road in the early break but XDS-Astana controlled in the peloton to make sure they had a chance at getting a result. The break was caught with 9KM to go as XDS-Astana were ramping up the pace at the bottom of Kékestető. Lidl-Trek took over the workload but with 3.5KM to go, the pace slowed a bit and Eric Fetter of United Shipped went on the attack. Lidl-Trek reeled him as the road got steeper and Sergio Higuita of XDS-Astana counter attacked. He was brought back by a group of around 10 riders and 1KM later, his teammate, Harold Martín López, put in a big effort and got away. The chase stalled and López soloed to the line to take his second win of the season and likely the GC as well. A group of five riders came in 7 seconds later led by Alessandro Covi of UAE-XRG with Albert Withen Philipsen of Lidl-Trek in third.
