There is hardly a bump on the profile of the ITT today between Tessenderlo-Ham. The route is just 9.7KM rectangle but it could be a major factor in deciding who will win the race overall.
Belgium was bathed in Summer sunshine and with little wind and few corners for the riders to navigate, the speed should be quite high. Ethan Hayter of Soudal Quickstep set the fastest early benchmark with a time of 10 minutes 29 seconds. A bunch of riders were within 5 seconds at the intermediate check but all lost more than 10 seconds in the second half. Filippo Ganna of Ineos was the big favorite on the day. He went through the check 2 seconds slower than Hayter and by the finish, he lost another 2 seconds to finish in provisional second place at 4 seconds.
No one else left to roll off the ramp had the ITT form to come close to Hayter and when Juan Sebastián Molano of UAE-XRG crossed the line as the last rider on course, Hayter was the official winner with a speed of 55.465KM/HR. Ganna finished second at 4 seconds with Florian Vermeersch of UAE-XRG in third at 16 seconds. Hayter now leads the overall by 2 seconds to Ganna and 15 seconds to Vermeersch with a difficult day to Durbuy tomorrow.
