The Tour de France creates a vacuum within professional cycling that very few races can break through. A handful of races continue however and the Tour of Austria is one. The first stage was a very punchy one with three sharp climbs in the final 35KM of the 168KM stage around Steyr. The startlist from UAE-XRG was strong enough to contend for a Grand Tour and they put on a display. Felix Großschartner took the stage win after attacking 800M from the line and finishing alone with Rafal Majka coming in 9 seconds later. The only non UAE-XRG rider in the top 5 was Archie Ryan of EF-Education EasyPost who took third, 12 seconds down on Großschartner. A group of 11 finished at 23 seconds and a group of 14 at 46 seconds. Anyone lower than 30th in GC is already going to have a difficult job making up that much time.
