The Vuelta a Castilla y Leon is held in central Spain and has changed complexion over the years. Last year, Caleb Ewan took the victory but other previous winners include Simon Yates, Alejando Valverde, and Pierre Rolland. The route for 2025 looks more like the one from 2024 but the last kilometer was uphill at an average of just under 7% so a puncheur from a reduced group was likely to arrive before the pure sprinters.
There were six men in the early break but only Ivan Loaisa of the Spanish National Team, Liam Flanagan of Skyline, Asier Pablo Gonzalez of Illes Balears Arabay, and Viacheslav Ivanov of Pingtan International Tourism Island remained going into 5KM to go. They were caught by a thundering peloton at 2.5KM to go led by UAE-XRG with Equipo Kern Pharma queueing behind. UAE-XRG led up to 500M to go but it was not as fast as might have been expected and the group was still almost all intact. Equipo Kern Pharma took over and split the group. At 300M to go, Eduard Prades of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA went but it was too early. Jesús Herrada of Cofidis came over the at 150M but he ran out of legs 20M from the line and Haimar Etxeberria of Equipo Kern Pharma came around to take his first professional win. Herrada held on for second with Christian Scaroni of XDS-Astana in third.
