With 1,300M of climbing over the 162KM route, the sprinters should get their opportunity today for a stage win, the only real chance at a bunch sprint all week. The riders head North from Cilleruelo de Abajo, through Santa Maria Del Campo, Castrojeriz, and Villanueva de Argaño before completing a circuit around Tobar and back to Villanueva de Argaño. A gentle turn South and East leads the race into the small village of Buniel and the finish line.
A break of four went up the road early including Txomin Juaristi and Iker Mintegi of Euskatel-Euskadi, Paul Llaneras of Iles Balears Arabay, and Ander Okamika of Burgos-Burpellet BH. They had nearly a 3 minute advantage with 54KM to go with Q36.5, UAE-XRG, and Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe chasing in the peloton. The chase continued through the brown landscape surrounding Burgos and with 35KM to go, the gap was down to a very manageable 90 seconds.
Intensity increased as the finish neared and on a rise in the road with 18KM to go, Llaneras was dropped from the break. The gap to the three remaining leaders was down to 25 seconds and despite their best effort, they were reabsorbed into the peloton with 8KM to go. 1KM later, other teams started to push to the front for position going into the sprint. Bahrain Victorious, Tudor Pro Cycling, and Lidl-Trek all arrived en masse at the same time and crowded the front. The final 3KM was rapid with false flat downhill roads a slight tailwind. Riders at the front were sprinting just to stay in position. Q36.5 led through 1KM to go and the final right corner. The last 500M was exceptionally quick as Gleb Syritsa of XDS-Astana took the lead to bring Matteo Malucelli to the front but the first sprinter to go for the line was Matteo Moschetti of Q36.5. He and Juan Sebastián Molano of UAE-XRG were side by side with 50M to go. Malucelli came out of Moschetti's slipstream with a head of steam and it was a photo finish on the line between the three riders. Moschetti ended up the winner by a very narrow margin to Malucelli with Molano there for third place.
