Details:
August 21, 2025 The first road stage covers a lot of ground with 202KM of racing from Essen to Herford. The riders head East out of Essen to Bekum for the first intermediate sprint and pass over the Stromberg and the Sennberg on the way to Bielefeld. The last obstacle on the course is at the bonus sprint with 3, 2, and 1 seconds on the Stuckenberg as the road rises away from the Werre River with 6KM to go. None of the climbs are difficult and the sprinters should pass over them without any trouble. The last corner comes with about 800M to go so the sprinters will have time their move well to hit the finish first in front of the Münsterkirchplatz in Herford. Both German Continental teams were represented in the break with Vinzent Dorn of BIKEAID and Miguel Heidemann and Jon Knolle of REMBE-rad net. They were joined by Andrew August of Ineos and the four leaders had 3 minutes 30 seconds with 106KM to go. Great crowds greeted Heidemann at the top of the Stromberg with 84KM to go as the German took maximum points at the top in front of Dorn. Uno-X Mobility and Lidl-Trek were chasing and through the village of Rheda-Wiedenbrück, the gap was down to just 1 minute 30 seconds. Racing continued in a holding pattern as the riders pedaled through the fields, hedgerows, and villages of the Münsterland. Jacopo Mosca did the majority of controlling in the peloton for Lidl-Trek but other teams started to push forward with 31KM to go. The road was blocked the entire way across but the speed was still up and the break was finally caught with 13KM remaining. Ineos were keen to position going into the Stuckenberg with bonus seconds available. Sam Watson of Ineos led and looked like he would take the 3 bonus seconds but Wout van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike came with speed in the last 50M and snagged the seconds. Watson hung on for 2 seconds with Riley Sheehan of Israel-Premier Tech taking the final bonus second. The bunch regrouped on the descent but teams were disorganized and it took until 3.5KM to go before the sprint trains were lined up. TotalEnergies, Soudal Quickstep, and Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe had numbers at the front but Tudor Pro Cycling and Bahrain Victorious were also pushing forward. Inside the final kilometer, Lorrenzo Manzin of TotalEnergies took a flyer but he was hauled back by Redbull-Bora Hansgrohe who were at full lead out speed for Danny van Poppel. Van Poppel was unleashed with 180M to go but Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek was already charging and overtook the Dutchman. Milan had the best line around the sweeping left turn but young sprinting phenom, Matthew Brennan of Visma-Lease a Bike, came out of Milan's slipstream and the pair threw their bikes at the line. Milan was initially awarded the win. Nearly 5 minutes passed and the race jury officially announced that Brennan had won after taking a close look at the photo. Danny van Poppel did a good sprint and had the perfect position but had to settle for third place. There is now a three way tie for first in GC but on count back, van Poppel takes the lead with Watson in second and Brennan in third.
