The European Championships kick off in Loriol-sur-Drôme just four days after the World's Road Race with the Individual Time Trial. The course is a watered down version of what we saw in Kigali but it should still produce a pure time trialist as the winner. Starting in Loriol-sur-Drôme, the route runs parallel with the Drôme River before crossing to head North on mostly flat roads. Halfway through the 24KM course, there is a 400M ramp at 6.5% through the village of Allex but it flattens out until the final kilometer which rises steadily at 5%. The are only a few names who have a chance of winning but it should be highly contested between the headlining names of Remco Evenepoel of Belgium, Filippo Ganna of Italy, Stefan Küng of Switzerland, Jakob Söderqvist and Sweden, Josh Tarling of Great Britain, and Daan Hoole of The Netherlands.
The sun was out but the Mistral was blowing from the North down the Rhône valley at an average of 30KM/HR and, with nearly half the course in a Northerly direction, the riders would have a heavy head wind to contend with. Niklas Larsen of Denmark put up the fastest early time which was quick enough to hold off everyone with just Ganna and Evenepoel still on course guaranteeing the Dane a Bronze medal.
Through the first time check after 6.5KM, Evenepoel put 14 seconds into Ganna which was the fastest time of the day. Through the second check at half distance, Evenepoel added another 11 seconds over Ganna. When Ganna crossed the finish line, he was the fastest at 29 minutes 9 seconds but Evenepoel was storming up the rise to the finish. The Belgian crossed the line 43 seconds faster than Ganna to take the European Champion's jersey with an average speed of 50.634KM/HR after having won the World's ITT 10 days ago.
