Italian racing is back with a series of Tuscan one-days a few weeks before the World's kick off in Rwanda. The 47th edition of the GP Industria & Artigianato starts and finishes in Larciano in which a series of different loops will total 196KM of racing and 2,400M of climbing. The race starts with four laps around Larciano that are rolling but with no focused climb. After the fourth lap of the Larciano circuit, the same circuit is extended to include a Southern loop which contains the 3KM, 6% climb to Fornello. After two laps up the Fornello, the riders have to take on three laps of the Larciano circuit plus and extended Northern loop which includes the San Baronto, an 8.4KM climb at 3.5%. The first half is quite hard before tailing off to nearly flat near the top. The third and final time up San Baronto comes just 6KM from the finish and would be the obvious attack point if the race had not split by that point.
Six riders got up the road including Tyler Stites of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Pierre Latour of TotalEnergies, Cedrik Bakke Christophersen of Unibet-Tietema Rockets, David Delgado of Burgos-Burpellet BH, Filippo Dignani of Sam-Vitalcare-Dynatek, and Matteo Spreafico of Mg.K Vis Costruzioni e Ambiente. Near the top of the first passage of San Baronto with 62KM to go, their maximum lead of 5 minutes had been cut to just 1 minute 20 seconds. XDS-Astana were lined out in the chase with EF-Education EasyPost sitting in tightly behind. The break split apart on the descent and through the finish line at 56KM to go, Stites and Dignani were alone at the front but everyone got back together a few kilometers with the exception of Latour. The bunch accelerated on the flat roads leading back to San Baronto and by the bottom of the penultimate ascent with 42KM to go, the gap was down to just 20 seconds.
XDS-Astana burned through a few men to set a hard pace and when they took their foot off the gas, Paul Double of Jayco AlUla attacked and was followed by Johannes Kulset of Uno-X Mobility. Samuele Battistella of EF-Education EasyPost bridged up to make three leaders at 4.5KM to the top. Battistella went off alone and started the descent 15 seconds ahead of a reduced peloton of around 30 riders. A few kilometers after passing through the finish line take the bell, Battistella was caught by the XDS-Astana led group that had built a 35 second lead over the remnants of the peloton.
EF-Education EasyPost and XDS-Astana led the front group around the circuit back to the start of the climb for the final time at 15KM to go. Joris Delbove of TotalEnergies attacked right from the bottom. The pace was far less severe which allowed the main peloton to regain contact. Just as they did however, Davide Piganzoli of Polti-VisitaMalta and Christian Scaroni of XDS-Astana attacked. Delbove was joined by Piganzoli and Scaroni with 7KM to climb but the pair came with speed and Delbove didn't enough in the legs to latch on. A reaction from Isaac del Toro of UAE-XRG blew the chase apart and he was quickly making his way across. Del Toro caught the two leaders with 4.5KM to the top, 10 seconds ahead of a group of five led by Marc Hirschi of Tudor Pro Cycling, Felix Engelhardt of Jayco AlUla, Alexandre Delettre of TotalEnergies, Louis Barré of Intermarché-Wanty, and Johannes Kulset.
At the top, the chase was 18 seconds behind the three leaders which was reduced to 15 seconds by the bottom at 2KM from the finish. Del Toro led through 1KM to go but Piganzoli didn't want to wait for a sprint. With 600M to go, he attacked but del Toro was quick to cover. At 250M, del Toro launched a powerful sprint that Piganzoli couldn't react to. Scaroni was on the wheel but del Toro kept the speed so high that Scaroni could barely hold on in the slipstream. Del Toro took the win with Scaroni just behind in second and Piganzoli in third. Engelhardt led the small chase group in for fourth, 23 seconds after del Toro.
