Yesterday's Queen stage to Vianden was difficult but the gaps are still very close with only 23 seconds separating the top 10. For a five day race, the ITT around Niederanven is quite long at 26KM which should be more than enough to decide the GC today. The first 4KM are uphill but only average 5%. The course continues North through Gonderange and Eschweiler before turning back to the South through Redenbourg and Niederanven for the finish, all while constantly rolling on 4%-5% grades. There is nowhere to hide against the clock, especially on a real racers course such as this.
The late Summer weather continued today for perfect racing conditions. There was very little wind and the sun's angle made for beautiful golden light. Joel Suter of Tudor Pro Cycling set the early benchmark and sat in the hotseat for quite a long time. A few riders nudged quicker than Suter but when Ethan Hayter of Soudal Quickstep came through the line, he smashed the fastest time by a full minute.
As the top GC riders were getting through the course, it became clear that Brandon McNulty of UAE-XRG was the fastest of the favorites. McNulty was quick but not quick enough to knock off Hayter who officially got the stage win by 28 seconds to McNulty with an average speed of 51.493KM/HR. Ben Healy of EF-Education EasyPost slotted in third on the day, 58 seconds down on Hayter.
After race leader Mattias Skjelmose of Lidl-Trek came across as the last rider to finish, we were able to calculate the GC. McNulty took a big step to winning the race overall as he now sits 47 seconds ahead of Skjelmose who finished the stage in 10th place. Richard Carapaz of EF-Education EasyPost moved up four spots to third overall after finishing 8th today. The big loser was Jordan Jegat of TotalEnergies. The Frenchman started the day in second place but lost over 2 minutes and now sits 11th overall.
