At the start of the week, the profiles suggested that we might get four bunch sprints but that could not have been further from reality. It's been an explosive race with a dynamic parcours that has produced some great action. The final stage from Køge to Rødovre is perfectly flat however and should be one that the sprint teams will be able to control. After KM0, the race heads due North for 50 km through bonus sprints in Hedehusene and Gundsømagle before reaching Ølstykke near the Roskilde Fjord. A turn back South brings the race to Rødovre, a suburb of Copenhagen, where the riders will take on 5 local laps, 7 km each, to close out the 2026 PostNord Tour of Denmark. With the amount of bonus seconds available, there are a few GC positions in the top 10 that could change by the end of the day, including third place.
Race Summary
A perfect Danish Summer's day was in store for the riders with comfortable temperatures around 20C (68F) and puffy cumulus clouds dotting the sky. With it being such a short stage of just 126 km, there was a lot of appetite for attacking and a group of 20 broke clear early on. No one threatening for the overall was in the group so the first of the bonus sprints was taken without any consequence to the GC. With 87 km to go, the leaders had 1 minute 20 seconds with both Uno-X Mobility and Visma-Lease a Bike controlling in the bunch.
The gap stayed firm through the second bonus sprint in Gundsømagle which was won by Niklas Larsen of Unibet-Rose Rockets. The break continued through the countryside and entered more suburban roads with 45 km to go on the approach to the circuit. Uno-X Mobility and Visma-Lease a Bike were having to work hard to keep the break in check because the lead group had pushed the average speed for the day over 50 km/hr.
The break arrived at the finish line with 35 km to go, 40 seconds ahead of the peloton. The crowd turned out to watch the race go by creating a nice, festive atmosphere at the finish. Through 3 laps to go, the peloton was working hard but the gap had only gone down to 34 seconds. Uno-X Mobility had stopped working but NSN Cycling was moving forward to put a man in the chase. After a brief intermission, Uno-X Mobility returned to the chase and with 2 laps to go, the gap was down to a much more manageable 17 seconds. With 12.5 km to go, the first attacks started from the break but the catch was imminent.
All but Mads Andersen and Matias Malmberg of Swatt Club had been reabsorbed into the peloton with 10 km remaining but their lead was tenuous at just 5 seconds. The Swatt Club duo took the bell with 5 seconds but more and more teams had pushed forward. Modern Adventure, Unibet-Rose Rockets, Alpecin-Premier Tech, and Lidl-Trek were all moving up but it did not stop Andreas Stokbro of ColoQuick from jumping across to the leaders. The move was short lived because the race was back together at 4 km remaining where the positioning battle for the sprint finish began in earnest.
At 2 km to go, Modern Adventure were pulling but only with one man which was too few to keep position to the finish. Behind, Polti-VisitMalta were well organized and hit the front 400 meters later. The final corner with 1,100 meters to go scrambled the trains but it was Lidl-Trek who emerged and led the bunch through 500 meters with two men in front of Max Walscheid who was the designated sprinter for the day. On Walscheid's wheel was Christophe Laporte of Visma-Lease a Bike and Giovanni Lonardi of Polti-VisitMalta with Henrik Pedersen of Uno-X Mobility surfing the wheels a bit further back. Jensen Plowright of Alpecin-Premier Tech was in terrible position so he was forced to open the sprint first from about tenth wheel up the right side of the road. Rasmus Pedersen of the Danish National Team followed Plowright through and squeezed between the barriers and the Aussie with 100 meters to go. Walscheid had a clean run on the left side but he didn't have enough pure speed to match Pedersen who sailed across the line in victory by half a wheel to Walscheid. Tom Crabbe of Flanders Baloise finished third after starting from too far back on the left side and ran out of road to contend for the win.
As expected, Wout van Aert went out the winner of the overall classification by 21 seconds to Lukáš Kubiš and 28 seconds to Henrik Pedersen who successfully defended his 1 second gap to secure third overall.
